A Rabbit’s Tale

I often get suggestions for stories but have yet to meet someone keen enough to put pen to paper.  My skills as a writer are pretty limited, so although I have a bank of ideas, a creative story arc is unlikely to flow from my grey matter.

My sister in-law once wrote a short story about a seagull in Edinburgh.   I have sketched the character but need to spend find some time illustrating the landscapes for the background – something that doesn’t come as easy to me as character design.

After doodling a few rabbits and posting them to Facebook a few months back, my sister in-law’s mother penned the first paragraph of a possible story (clearly writing is a family trait).  I liked her intro and thought I’d post it here – it was an excuse to draw more animals!

Perhaps, if someone feels the urge, they could draft another paragraph or two – it would make a nice little series of blog posts!   So , Nicky, thanks for your contribution….

We rabbits are numerous, though like icebergs and Russian spies we are more under than over ground.

We have a long history of storytelling – from the epic Watership Down, through Peter Rabbit and of course the proverbial Bre’r Rabbit.

Some might think hares are more elegant – but we don’t waste our time gazing at the moon. While they gaze, we graze. Hares are distractible, hence their inability to win races against tortoises; we rabbits can not only beat a tortoise, we have even won races against Porsches – those loud, often red animals who drink evil smelling liquids and regurgitate humans.

Unlike you humans, we teach our young by telling stories – a flat screen cannot convey the detail, especially moral and emotional, of a good story told by Granny or Aunty.

Here follows the fabled rabbit story of how William Rabbit won a race against one of these Porsches, which I believe has never before been translated into a human language.

If you think you can see where this story is going…why not get in touch?

Leaf Tornado

LEAF TORNADO

Just a little sketch I did recently after I found myself in the middle of a leaf tornado.  It happened so suddenly that I was unable to get my camera out to capture it.  Instead I drew it – one of those unadulterated joyous moments that make you want to laugh out loud and spin around like Julie Andrews in the Alps.

On a windy day, I love to watch piles of colourful leaves come alive and race each other down the road. Tumbling, twisting, turning, clacking and tapping on the tarmac then taking off and dancing high into the air.   Since my tornado moment,  few leaves remain – they are either a soggy, slippy mulch or they’ve been hoovered up by the city council’s cleaning trucks.  I shall miss them.

Volume

volumeMy hair doesn’t like it when it’s too rainy, or too hot, or too cold, or least of all when it’s subjected to products that are designed for heads that are not blessed/cursed with thick, wiry, unwieldy hair like mine.   It’s big at the best of times, but add a touch of volumising shampoo and watch the disco fro grow!

A word or two about cats

bad cat habitsWhat is it about cats? Aloof, independent, marathon sleepers, expert hunters, master climbers and your friend, but only on their terms. They are fascinating and well-loved pets to some, yet despised and put into dustbins by others.  They rival dogs as our favourite pets and were once considered sacred deities by the ancient Egyptians.  They are featured in calendars, novels, their own diaries,  films, cartoons, haiku and of course, on YouTube!

I have to admit I’ve spent many an hour browsing through endless compilations of cats doing crazy things.  It’s pure entertainment. Don’t get me wrong, I spend equal amounts of time browsing ‘dogs to the craziest things’ videos, but today, it’s all about the cats.  Take for instance, Maru who enjoys trying to insert himself into boxes that were clearly never intended for cat habitation.    Or perhaps a strange Japanese show where cats climb into bowls…?!

Quite recently, a friend of mine announced that she was opening a luxury 5 star cat hotel.  I was fascinated to learn that the franchise offers four poster beds with silk sheets, music piped into the rooms, trout breakfasts, cat massage, a dedicated cat entertainer and the option to have your cat send you a postcard whilst you are away.    Wow, what more is there to say?   Perhaps I should leave you with the cartoon…it brings cats down a peg or two.

Holiday UK #4 – The Ravens

ravenHoliday diary excerpt 27th June:

Yesterday we hauled our aching limbs to Dartmoor once again. Our chosen destination was Burrator Reservoir and a circular walk around Sheepstor. It was a steep climb up Sheepstor to experience 360 degree panoramic views of the moor and reservoir.  Thankfully there were no bogs.

We happened upon a sheep carcass being devoured by Ravens and decided to stop so I could take some photos.  The one day I decide not to take my telephoto lens, was the one day I wanted to use it!…”

Frustratingly I didn’t get any good pictures due the lens issue and I still question whether they actually were ravens.  Perhaps you’d like to decide.  They were huuuge!
